What is motivation and what does staying motivated mean?

Motivation is an internal process. Whether we define it as a drive or a need, motivation is that condition inside us that desires a change, either in the self or the environment. The essence of motivation is energized and persistent goal-directed behavior. In simpler words when we are motivated, we move and take action.

In everyday usage ‘motivation” or “being motivated” is referred to as why we do something i.e. the way we think or the way we work.

Types of Motivation and how they get you motivated

Different types of motivation fall into two main categories.

Intrinsic Motivation

Intrinsic motivation is the type of motivation in which an individual is being motivated by internal desires. In this type, the positive results and internal satisfaction is what gives you motivation.

Extrinsic Motivation

Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, is the type of motivation in which the individual is being motivated by external desires. You also get motivated by focusing on the negative backlash that will occur if you do not take action.

Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation

How do I find motivation?

Everybody wishes to stay positive and motivated and seldom ask ourselves “how to stay focused and motivated in life?” But shouldn’t you find your motivation first? Finding Motivation is what will lead you to the answer of how to become motivated.

How to find motivation in life?

Some days you watch movies like “the secret” (crafted after the book of Rhonda Byrne) and you will get motivated for a month. You’ll watch motivational videos of Sandeep Maheshwari and get motivated for a week. Watching inspirational TED talks will get you motivated for a few days and reading articles about motivation will only last few hours. (ironical, isn’t it?)

Nothing Last forever.

You have to stop looking for motivation somewhere else. Stop trying to find motivation in others.

Look within yourself.

Know what you want in life; how you want to spend your life. Do you want to live an ordinary life and regret it on your death bed or you can take matters into your own hands now and make something better out of your life.

One day or day one. You decide.

How to get yourself motivated?

Once you set a goal in life and have solved your quest for “where to find motivation” you can easily get that spark back. But sometimes in spite of knowing our goal and aspirations in life we struggle in answering “how to get constantly motivated?”

Some tips and tricks to “how to really get motivated”

Even after finding your motivation, it is often hard to constantly stay motivated. You get swayed away easily by slight changes and difficulties. If you still can’t find the answer to “how to stay constantly motivated?” then these are some things to do to become more motivated.

1. Set goals

Before knowing the answer to how to be more motivated in life you need to set your goals and focus on achieving them.

Set your goals to be more motivated

What is the proper way to set right goals?

Take sometime and go to a silent and comfortable in your house or wherever you are and answer:

  • What do I want to be?
  • What do I want to do?
  • What do I want to have?
  • What do I want to improve?
  • And do I have to change?

If you answer these questions with complete honesty, believe me and trust yourself, You are in the right track to getting more motivated.

2. Plot your progress

Plotting your progress is as important as setting your goals. Without knowing your progress you are just driving on a circular road with no beginning and end.

Plot your progress to be more motivated

How to track your progress?

Assess yourself from time to time. Take a step back and look at the big picture. Were you able to change anything, your attitude towards life, or your way of living, or are you still the same demotivated person trying to understand “why is it so hard to be motivated” which is clearly an excuse by the way.

It is necessary to understand that you can proceed slowly. These things take time. You have to completely change your directions in life and the way you live. Keep moving even if you have to crawl. The easiest way in which you can track down your process involves the use of pen and paper. Write down some basic things that you had initially wanted to achieve that day or month and at the end of the day check how many of them were you able to strikeout.

The joy you get while striking out those “done task” is so pleasing that it is the best way to be more motivated.

Perseverance is the key to success.

It is okay to look stupid. Nobody knows it all.

3. Have clarity in your goals and thoughts

Lack of clarity in your goals and what you wish in life can instantaneously pill you miles backward from where you were headed. How many people can come up with a good enough answer to “What do you want in life?” right this moment. 80% of people will fumble and give illogical answers.

have clarity in thoughts for more motivation

What to do to get clarity in life?

Clarity begins with smaller things. Don’t be confused all the time and think about achieving multiple goals at a time. Begin with the one simple goal that will have the most effect in your life and begin working on that. Focus on smaller things and project that decision making in bigger things.

You know better than anyone else what makes you happy and what doesn’t. The trick is to make sure your actions align with your knowledge. These are the best ways to have clarity in life and also best ways to stay motivated.

4. Use rewards

This might not sound compelling and you might think you aren’t kids who need candies after completing work but trust me you do! Not candies, but rewards i.e. something that satisfies you and provides happiness.

reward yourself to gain more motivation

How to reward yourself for your progress?

Rewards are the keys to the many locks on your quest to “how to get motivated?” If you keep on working without getting anything your subconscious will stop helping you and pull you back. You can control your subconscious in the right ways.

Reward yourself with whatever gives you pleasure and positive sensations that give us a sense of fulfillment. We are addicted to dopamine. It is what drives us each day to work harder to lead a happy life. Laugh out, Watch your favorite shows, movies, and dramas or go out for a ride. It can be anything that gives you happiness. These are also ways to get your motivation back.

5. Don’t do it alone

This is as important as the above-stated points. You have to know that you don’t have to it alone. Overthinking about your thoughts and aspirations not only leads you to be not motivated but it can also eat you alive.

Don't do it alone.

What can you do?

Talk to someone. You are not alone and you don’t have to do this alone. Understand that this isn’t easy. Talk to your friends, family, or your partner; what you are feeling, your goals, and what you wish to achieve. This will not only make you feel lighter but also help you reset and begin with a new motivation and perspective.

6. Challenge yourself

Here we are inferring about reaching a level where we can be motivated to do things again. Every moment in life we should challenge our self. Not only does it help in getting motivated but also helps in bringing out our competitive side which is often really good and positive in situations like these.

Challenge yourself to be more motivated

How to challenge yourself?

The best thing I would suggest is to do something new each day that you initially thought was difficult or even impossible. The true challenge however would be to find a way to make true progress continuously every day rather than being satisfied by your mundane life and some measly task.

Train yourself to get out of your ordinary life and discipline yourself on the way to the way of progress. Once you have achieved the first goal don’t forget to celebrate your accomplishment. That’s your reward!

How to stay motivated?

Now you have done a good task finding your motivation. Slowly and steadily you are becoming more motivated but another important thing is “how do you stay motivated” for a longer period of time. All your efforts, hard work, and that positive thinking will go to waste if you lose your motivation midway. You would have to begin again.

How to constantly stay motivated?

1. Control your physiology

Have you ever compared a positive/motivated person with a demotivated person? How do you know who the demotivated person is? What do you think a demotivated person looks like? It isn’t written on their face, is it? But we still can imagine by the way they stand, their posture and the position of their shoulders.

improve your physiology to be more motivated

How to control your physiology?

The way you perceive yourself and your physiology can greatly affect your subconscious and motivation level. Stand upright with your head always held high. Walk confidently, talk confidently, and always have a good posture. Pull your shoulders back, straighten your back and relax.

How to feel motivated again? Raise your hands and think you have won. It does work wonders.

2. Stop procrastination

“Let me do this task a little later, okay now an hour later, another hour and then another and then finally tomorrow” How many times do you do this each day? Are you a chronic procrastinator? If you are then you need to first work on this before trying to find how to be more motivated! When you are prone to procrastination then you can easily overwhelm yourself which can lead to a massive depletion in motivation.

stop procastination to be more motivated

How to stop procrastinating?

All the tasks that you have put on hold for tomorrow just do them now! I know it will require an enormous amount of will and power to work on them right now when you have already made up your mind to them tomorrow. But trust me, once you complete the first task in the bundle of tasks you left for tomorrow, the relief and joy would bring you much more motivation than all the above steps combined.

3. Always surround yourself with positive people to get motivated

Have you heard of the importance if those 5 people?

  • If you hang around 5 confident people you will be the 6th.
  • If you hang around 5 intelligent people you will be the 6th.
  • If you hang around 5 millionaires you will be the 6th.
  • If you hang around 5 idiots people you will be the 6th.

Let me add to this

  • If you hang around 5 demotivated people you will be the 6th.

This is called the Chameleon effect.

surround your self with motivated people

How to stay around positive people

Just as you need to stay away from things that steal your motivational energy, stay away from such people too. They will suck you in their dark hole and it will be hard to come out. You have to be positive yourself. It’s just a matter of perception. Look for people who are willing to change, know how to accept their mistakes, are optimistic, and are willing to step out of their comfort zones. These are the right traits that you need to look in those five people to be the 6th. Always do remember

Be the change you desire to see.

4. Know when to build habits instead of seeking motivation

People often get confused between habits and when to seek motivation. You think that people who get up early or eat healthily are so motivated in life. You wonder “how to feel motivated” like them. But that’s where you are wrong.

That’s not motivation, that’s a habit! They don’t have to muster up motivation to get up at % am every morning, because it’s a habit.

build your habits to instead of seeking motivation

How to build good habits?

Start small and be consistent. You don’t need to hit big in the beginning. Wait patiently and be consistent in developing those habits. Stop procrastinating! And begin now. Understand the habits you want to develop and why you felt the need to develop those habits? Sick to those habits forever. Take one day at a time and go easy on yourself.

Perhaps instead of asking “how to get yourself motivated” you should ask “how to develop these basic habits”.

One day or day one. You decide.

Nobody ever got better overnight. People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well neither does bathing-that’s why we recommend it daily.

Zig Ziglar

Nothing can be achieved instantly. You have to work hard and harder. Hard work can beat talent! You just need to set the right goals, have proper clarity, and challenge yourself. Be specific in what you want. Lack of motivation in any area of life is because you haven’t decided in detail what you want.

Nothing is impossible when you are motivated

Don’t stop when you are tired. Stop when you are done!

You might feel it burdening and it might feel easier to lose all that hope and motivation but hang in there and push yourself a little. It is worth it! Stop making a “lack of motivation” as a part of your character. Some things take longer to happen but Patience is the key.

Magic is believing in yourself. If you can make that happen, you can make anything happen.

Johann Wolfgang Van Goethe

We hope that you found your answers and ways on how to find and get motivation.
