A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single first step.
What is the one big dream that you always wanted to accomplish when you were young? What did you want to become? How you want your self to be? How did you see yourself doing? The general masses’ dream is to become a doctor, an engineer, a scientist, a fashion designer, a pilot, or a businessman. Do you remember yours? What was the first step you took to achieve this dream?
But this isn’t the point here. Everybody does something in life. The point here is what was the first step you took to follow your real passion? Have you ever taken that ‘first step’ or are you still dozing around doing nothing and envying people who are following their passion?
Have you taken the first step?
How many times have you thought about doing something new, something good for your life but couldn’t take the first step? Many of us had desires, passion but haven’t done anything to fulfill them, why? Because we do not have the will to start these goals, we do not take the first step needed to follow our passion, and what is left in our hands is a big dream, just a dream!
Why do you not take the first step?
Ask yourself, why are you not giving it a shot? Why are you not even trying to fulfill that dream? Are you afraid of what other people will say if you fail? Whom are you afraid of, those who don’t even have a dream! Why aren’t you are starting to mold that dream? Yeah, I accept that the first step is always the hardest, but you have to be strong and take that step. You can’t be part of the crowd. You don’t want to be a part of the majority who have given up after seeing the difficulty level of the first step towards their goal.
Why should you take the first step?
Do you want to be lost in the crowd and be like 90% of people? I am sure your soul will answer ‘No’. Everyone dreams to be rich, have cars, a big house, and much more but have you ever thought if you are not different from others, how will you achieve these? You can’t be a billionaire within a night, you have to work hard for it, you have to take the toughest step- the first step. Start planning about your dream, start making snippets on how you will achieve that dream. Sitting in a crowd and only thinking won’t give you big cars and bungalows, you have to start moving towards the goal every day and work harder than everyone.
After dreaming of any goal, what do you do to convert them to reality? Yeah, you sit and think how will I achieve this? How will I do this much work? And finally, you think that ‘this is not my cup of tea’ and you sit back with that 90% of people. This is what you do not have to do, you have to start, you have to take the first step. Think again and again, think about the situation if you convert your dream into reality. Let your whole body fall for your passion. Start making plans, take small steps, baby steps and you will see that you are coming closer to your dream day by day. Your self-esteem, self-confidence will boost by 100x. It would be more relatable with a personal anecdote.
How did I take the first step?
Everyone will agree to this when I say quarantine hit us pretty bad. The pandemic is messing with our brains and getting through each day is an achievement itself. I always wanted to do something on my own, something for myself that only I owns and control. I had fair writing skills and decided to step into the enthralling world of blogging. Sounds pretty easy right? It was not!
I took a lot of time before I finally took the first step. I researched all about it, overworked, and confused myself. There was so much to do and so much I didn’t know. I didn’t know where to begin let alone take the first step. This wasn’t the only worry I had. “What if I fail?” constantly crossed my mind. How will my friends react when I tell them I am starting something new. They’ll probably laugh and make fun of me when I fail. I was scared of the hard work and getting approved by the friends it involved. I dropped the idea. Yes, I did!
But sitting idle at home wasn’t working out. All my friends were doing something. Turns out everyone was doing something valuable with life. My self-esteem was lowering day by day. So what if I fail I thought, I should at least begin and here I am! Would I say I have attained success? Have I achieved what I thought of? Hell no! That’s a very long way. But I am still content. I like working very much. Every day I get stuck at a few things but at the end of the day, I sleep with content in my heart that I am doing something I truly wished for. I am doing something for myself. And even if I fail someday I’ll be proud that I took the first step that others didn’t take.
I am not part of the majority. I refuse to be apart of the majority that doesn’t work for their dreams and passion and thinks that just-like-that one day the pieces would fall back to the place and they’ll get what they want. Life doesn’t work this way and it’s you who need to take the first step.
How can you take the first step?
I’ll tell from my experience what I had to overcome and what needs to be done.
1. Don’t be afraid of what people will say
Never let other people’s thoughts and choices decide for you. These are those people who don’t have the will and guts to follow their dream and sit there because they have nothing better to do. Try to ignore such people and if you are too scared of the social stigma try to keep it a secret for a few months. This way, you will not be bothered by the fact that people may judge you and have a positive mindset. Don’t listen to what others are saying, your purpose is only what you want.
Always remember- the people who judge don’t matter and the people that matter doesn’t judge.
2. Don’t be afraid of failure
Success and failure are two sides of a coin, you can’t expect that you will achieve success within a day, someday you will fail, and someday you will win. But, what you have to keep in mind is that failure will teach you how to win. If you win every day than what’s the joy in living the monotonous life? Life is like a wheel. Somedays you go down and some days you are at the top. You just need to keep moving and take the first step. Failure will increase the joy of success. All you need is hard work and never-ending determination. Wisdom is taking notes from your failures and you will be close in taking the first step.
3. Don’t wait for the situation to get perfect
Don’t wait for the right time or the right situation to take the first step. You are wise enough to know that there is never the right time because no matter how you see, there will always be something which will hold you back and you will mark this as “not the right situation or time, maybe next time”. There will always be something that makes you think that. Do it now or you can never begin. Take the first step anyway, you’ll figure out the journey.
4. Don’t wait until your skill is good
There is no one who is perfect when they take the first step. There would always be a lack of skills in covering the first step. Don’t be afraid that you don’t know how to do or what to do. Skills will automatically develop after a number of failures. That’s why failure is so important. The point which you have to keep in mind is “you will learn more by doing than by waiting”. Start now, no matter if it’s with the raw skills, just do it take the first step. Had I waited for the right time, I would never have started.
5. Trust your dreams and your gut
Trust your dreams, it will give you the essential motivation and focus needed to achieve your goals. It will help in taking the first step. You can’t fool your own heart, stay loyal to yourself, and have faith in yourself. Visualize your dream, think about the situations after your dream fulfills and strive to work hard to achieve that. Don’t get swayed away by people’s opinions or your small failures. Trust your gut and take the first step today.
When someone tells you that something can’t be done, all it means is that it hasn’t been done before.Lori Greiner
6. Don’t expect only vanillas
If it was easy everyone would have done it. You are doing something that was given up by someone because he didn’t want to work hard. Don’t expect to be on the winning side always just be ready for the flip. Expect and prepare. It is life, ups and downs come and goes, what you have to keep in mind is that you really not have to lose hope. Hard work never goes in vain. You always learn something when you work for your passion. You will fail countless times before you succeed but this shouldn’t restrict you from taking the first step. Keep this in mind and take the first step anyway.
Just like Lord Krishna said- Set your heart, upon your work but never its reward. Work hard for your passion, follow your dreams, and don’t worry about the result. You are doing well, just take the first step.
You can do it, just believe yourself and always back your skills. Remember, success doesn’t come in a single night. You have to burn, before you shine.
